An e-Aadhaar card is essentially your actual Aadhaar card in PDF format. UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India) issues this digitally signed document, making it as legally valid as the physical card sitting in your wallet. Or the one you can't find. Same legal standing either way. This makes e-Aadhaar card download a convenient alternative to carrying a physical copy.

The document carries a digital signature and QR code that authorities can verify electronically. Government offices, banks, insurance companies, telecom providers, they all accept e-Aadhaar for KYC verification purposes without hesitation. This is why many users now prefer to download e-Aadhaar instead of relying on physical documents. So, no need to carry laminated cards anymore.

One clarification worth making: the "e" simply means electronic. The information remains identical to your physical card, including your photograph, demographic details, and that 12-digit Aadhaar number. The process of Download e-Aadhaar Online does not alter or limit its validity in any way.

Similarities Between Regular and Masked Aadhaar

Here's something most people discover only when specifically asked for it: masked Aadhaar exists as a privacy-focused alternative.

Regular e-Aadhaar displays your complete 12-digit number. Masked Aadhaar shows only the last 4 digits, replacing the first 8 with "XXXX XXXX". Both versions carry equal legal validity and are available during e-Aadhaar card download.. The difference lies purely in how much information gets exposed when you share the document.

The masked version works perfectly for situations where you need to prove identity but don't want your complete-Aadhaar number floating around on photocopies at random verification counters.

Prerequisites for Downloading e-Aadhaar

Required Documents and Numbers (Aadhaar, EID, VID)

Before attempting the e-Aadhaar card download, you'll need at least one of three identifiers:

Aadhaar Number: The 12-digit unique identification number printed on your physical card. Most common option when you download e-Aadhar.

Enrolment ID (EID): A 28-digit number found on the enrolment slip you received when first registering for Aadhaar. Useful when you've enrolled but haven't received your number yet.

Virtual ID (VID): A 16-digit temporary number that is mapped to your Aadhaar without revealing the actual number. Generated through UIDAI portal and valid for a limited period. Great for privacy-conscious individuals who wish to download e-Aadhaar Online securely

Don't have any of these handy? The retrieval process using name and date of birth can help. More on that in the alternative methods section.

Registered Mobile Number and OTP Verification

This part trips up more people than you'd expect. The mobile number linked to your Aadhaar record must be active and capable of receiving OTPs. No exceptions for the standard e-Aadhaar card download process.

UIDAI sends a one-time password to verify that you're actually the person requesting the download. Without access to that registered number, the online method simply won't work. The OTP expires within 10 minutes, so keep your phone nearby during the process.

Changed your number since registering? You'll need to visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra to update it first. Or use the alternative method described later that involves biometric verification.

Internet Connectivity and PDF Reader

Obvious requirements, but worth mentioning:

Stable internet connection. The UIDAI website handles millions of requests. Slow or interrupted connections cause timeout errors and failed e-Aadhaar card download attempts.

A PDF reader on whatever device you're using. The e-Aadhaar arrives as a password-protected PDF file. Adobe Acrobat Reader works fine. So do most built-in PDF viewers on smartphones and browsers these days.

How to Download e-Aadhaar Online Via UIDAI Official Website

The most straightforward e-Aadhaar card download method. Here's the exact process:

Step 1: Open your browser and visit https://myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in/

Step 2: Click on "Download Aadhaar" from the available services

Step 3: Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number (or EID/VID if you prefer)

Step 4: Complete the captcha verification. Those distorted characters exist to prevent automated downloads.

Step 5: Click "Send OTP" and wait for the message on your registered mobile

Step 6: Enter the 6-digit OTP within 10 minutes

Step 7: Choose between regular Aadhaar or masked Aadhaar before clicking "Download"

Step 8: The PDF downloads automatically. Remember, it's password-protected (explained in detail below).

The entire process takes about 2 minutes assuming your mobile network cooperates with the OTP delivery. Many users prefer this route to Download e-Aadhaar Online directly from UIDAI.

Using the mAadhaar Mobile App

UIDAI's official app offers another convenient download e-Aadhaar method. Available on both Android and iOS, though performance varies by device.

Setting up mAadhaar:

Download from Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Only the official UIDAI app, not any third-party versions floating around.

Create a 4-digit PIN during first setup. This PIN protects access to your Aadhaar details within the app.

Register your Aadhaar number and verify through OTP.

Downloading through the app:

  • Open mAadhaar and enter your PIN
  • Navigate to "My Aadhaar" section
  • Select "Download Aadhaar"
  • Choose regular or masked version
  • Verify with OTP or TOTP (time-based one-time password generated within the app)
  • The downloaded file saves to your phone's storage

One advantage here: the TOTP feature lets you generate verification codes even without mobile network, as long as you've set it up beforehand. Useful when traveling or in areas with poor connectivity. Useful when traveling or in areas with poor connectivity during e-Aadhaar card download.

Through DigiLocker Platform

DigiLocker connects directly to government databases, making it another reliable option for e-Aadhaar card download.

The process:

  • Visit https://www.digilocker.gov.in/ or use the DigiLocker app
  • Sign up with your mobile number if you haven't already
  • Complete-Aadhaar authentication
  • Navigate to "Issued Documents" section
  • Click on "Pull Documents"
  • Select UIDAI from the issuing authority dropdown
  • Your e Aadhaar card appears in the issued documents list
  • Download or share directly from DigiLocker

The DigiLocker version carries the same legal validity as downloading directly from UIDAI. Plus, it stays stored in your digital locker for quick access anytime. Many government services now accept DigiLocker documents without requiring separate uploads.

Alternative Methods to Download Aadhaar

Using Name and Date of Birth to Retrieve Details

Forgot your Aadhaar number entirely? Lost the enrolment slip? This retrieval option helps.

On the UIDAI portal, look for "Retrieve Lost or Forgotten EID/UID" option. Enter your full name exactly as registered, your date of birth, and registered mobile number. The system matches these details against records and sends your Aadhaar or enrolment number via SMS.

A few caveats: name spelling must match exactly. Ramesh Kumar won't retrieve records registered under Ram Kumar. Date format matters too. Double-check everything before submitting.

Downloading e Aadhar Card Without a Registered Mobile Number (Aadhaar Seva Kendra)

No access to your registered mobile? The online methods won't work. But alternatives exist.

Visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or Enrolment Center:

  • Locate the nearest center through UIDAI's center locator tool
  • Carry a valid ID proof (any government-issued document)
  • Request Aadhaar reprint or mobile number update
  • Complete biometric verification (fingerprint/iris scan)
  • Pay the nominal fee (around ₹50 for reprint)

The center processes your request and either provides a printed copy or updates your mobile number so you can download online.

For those living abroad, Indian embassies in some countries offer Aadhaar services. Alternatively, if someone trustworthy back home has your registered mobile access, they can technically initiate the download, though sharing OTPs carries obvious security risks.

Understanding the e-Aadhaar PDF Password

Password Format Explained

This single question generates more confusion than anything else about e-Aadhaar card download: what's the password?

The format follows a specific pattern: first four letters of your name in UPPERCASE + birth year (YYYY)

That's it. No special characters. No lowercase mixing. Just those two elements combined.

The "name" here refers to whatever appears first in your Aadhaar record. Could be your first name alone, or first part of a compound name.

Examples of Password Combinations

Let's work through some real scenarios:

Example 1:

Name on Aadhaar: Rajesh Kumar

Year of Birth: 1985

Password: RAJE1985

Example 2:

Name on Aadhaar: Priya Sharma

Year of Birth: 1992

Password: PRIY1992

Example 3:

Name on Aadhaar: Mohammad Ali

Year of Birth: 1978

Password: MOHA1978

Example 4:

Name on Aadhaar: K Venkatesh (initials expanded)

Year of Birth: 1990

Password: KVEN1990 (uses the initial as first character)

Common mistakes to avoid:

Using lowercase letters (priy1992 won't work, must be PRIY1992)

Using full name instead of first four letters

Confusing year of birth with current year

Extra spaces or special characters

If your name has fewer than four characters (say, "Uma"), use whatever letters exist. UMA1985 would be the password for someone named Uma born in 1985.

Troubleshooting Common Errors During e-Aadhaar Download Online

"OTP not received" problem:

Wait at least 3 minutes before requesting again. Network delays happen.

Check if your mobile has signal issues.

Verify the number registered with Aadhaar matches your current number.

Try during off-peak hours. Heavy traffic during morning hours sometimes causes delays.

"Technical error" messages:

Clear browser cache and try again.

Use a different browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge).

Disable VPN if active. UIDAI servers sometimes block VPN connections.

Try the mAadhaar app as alternative.

"Aadhaar number not found" error:

Double-check for typos in the 12-digit number.

Ensure you're using Aadhaar number, not EID or VID in the wrong field.

If genuinely enrolled, contact UIDAI helpline 1947 for assistance.

Password rejected despite correct format:

Check name spelling on your Aadhaar card. Use exactly those letters.

Year of birth must be the actual birth year, not enrolment year.

All four letters must be uppercase.

For names with special characters or spaces, try variations.

Masked Aadhaar displays only the last four digits of your number (XXXX XXXX 1234 format). You may use it for rentals, hotel check-ins, courier verification, and situations where full Aadhaar exposure isn't necessary. Carries equal legal validity.

Absolutely. The digitally signed e-Aadhaar download online carries full legal validity under UIDAI regulations. Banks, government offices, telecom companies, and other institutions accept it for identity verification just like the physical card.

First four letters of your name in UPPERCASE plus your birth year. Example: Name is Suresh, birth year 1987, password is SURE1987.

Not through online methods. Visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra with valid ID proof for biometric verification and mobile number update. Alternatively, request a physical reprint at the center for approximately ₹75 inclusive of GST.

Use the "Retrieve Lost EID/UID" option on UIDAI portal. Enter your name and date of birth exactly as registered. The system sends your details to the registered mobile number.
