1. Visit the Income Tax Department’s e-Filing Portal
The first and most reliable way to check your income tax refund status is by visiting the official Income Tax e-filing portal. Here are the steps:
- Go to the Portal: Visit https://www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in
- Login to Your Account: You need to log in using your user ID (your PAN) and the password you created when registering on the portal.
- Check the Status: After logging in, you’ll see a dashboard with various options. Click on the “View Returns/Forms” tab and select “Income Tax Returns.” You can then view the details of your filed returns, including the income tax refund status.
Refund Status Options
Once you click on your relevant return, you’ll see the status of your refund. Possible statuses include:
- Refund Paid: The refund has been successfully credited to your account.
- Refund Awaited: Your refund is still in the process of being processed.
- Refund Rejected: Your refund claim has been rejected due to an issue and you’ll need to rectify this and reapply.
2. Use the TIN NSDL Portal
Another effective way to check your income tax refund status is by visiting the Tax Information Network (TIN) website, which is managed by NSDL.
- Go to the TIN Portal: Visit the official TIN website at https://www.tin-nsdl.com.
- Select the “Know Your Refund Status” Option: On the homepage, find and click on the “Know Your Refund Status” option under the “Services” section.
- Enter Required Details: You’ll be prompted to enter your PAN number, Assessment Year, and the Captcha Code.
- Check Your Status: After entering the details, click on “Submit.” The portal will show you the current status of your refund.
- Refund Status on TIN: The status updates on TIN are similar to those shown on the e-filing portal. If your refund has been processed, it will show up with specific details about the transaction.

The Income Tax Department also provides updates on your refund status through SMS and email. To get timely notifications, ensure your contact details (mobile number and email) are correctly registered in your ITR.
