When you are faced with unexpected expenses, finding a quick way to access funds can be challenging. Selling your valuable items like jewellery might seem like an option during such emergencies.

However, it is not always ideal, especially when those pieces hold sentimental value. That’s where a diamond loan can be a viable option as it allows you to pledge your precious jewellery as collateral to borrow money without losing its ownership.

What Exactly is a Diamond Loan?

Secured Credit Against Precious Stones

A loan against diamond works like gold loans but with a different collateral. You deposit your diamond jewellery with a lender. They assess its value. You receive a loan amount based on that assessment.

The diamonds stay with the lender until you repay. Miss payments? They have the right to sell your stones to recover their money.

Why Not Just Sell?

Fair question. Selling fetches you the full market value, right?

Not necessarily. Diamond resale markets are tricky. Dealers offer significantly less than what you paid. Sentimental pieces become impossible to replace. And selling is permanent.

A loan against diamond lets you access funds while keeping the option to reclaim your jewellery. For temporary cash needs, this makes more sense.

How Diamond Valuation Works

This is where the loan gets complicated. Unlike gold, diamonds don't have standardised pricing.

The 4Cs Everyone Talks About

Every diamond gets evaluated on four criteria. Lenders use these to determine your loan eligibility.

Carat weight. Simply put, how heavy the stone is. Bigger diamonds generally mean higher loan amounts. But size alone doesn't determine value.

Cut quality. How well the diamond was shaped affects its brilliance. Excellent cuts fetch better valuations than poor ones.

Clarity grade. Internal flaws and external blemishes matter. Flawless diamonds are rare and valuable. Included stones (those with visible imperfections) command less.

Colour grade. Colourless diamonds score higher. Yellow tints reduce value for regular diamonds. Fancy coloured diamonds play by different rules.

Why Valuation Feels Frustrating

You bought that ring for two lakhs. The lender values it at sixty thousand.

Why the massive gap?

Retail prices include dealer margins, making charges, brand premiums, and GST. Lenders strip all that away. They assess only the raw diamond value based on current market rates.

Certified diamonds from reputed labs (GIA, IGI, HRD) receive better valuations. Non-certified stones get conservative estimates because the lender assumes higher risk.

Tip: Get your diamonds certified before approaching lenders. Certification from GIA or IGI typically improves the loan-to-value ratio you'll receive.

Loan Against Diamond: Key Features

Understanding standard terms helps you compare options.

Loan Amount You Can Expect

Most lenders offer sixty to seventy-five percent of the assessed diamond value. Some might stretch to eighty percent for high-quality certified stones with excellent documentation.

That two-lakh retail ring valued at sixty thousand by the lender? You're probably getting forty to forty-five thousand as loan amount.

Interest Rates Range

Diamond loans typically carry interest between twelve to eighteen percent annually. Rates vary based on lender type, loan amount, and your credit profile.

Banks usually offer lower rates than NBFCs. But their valuation might be more conservative. Trade-offs exist.

Tenure Options

Short-term loans dominate this category. Three months to three years covers most offerings. Some lenders allow bullet repayment where you pay interest monthly and principal at the end.

Processing Fees and Other Charges

Expect one to two percent as processing fees. Valuation charges might apply separately. Storage fees sometimes get added for longer tenures.

Read the fine print carefully before signing.

Eligibility Criteria for a Loan Against Diamonds

Requirements stay relatively simple compared to unsecured loans.

Who Can Apply?

Most lenders accept applications from:

  • Individuals aged 21 to 65 years
  • Salaried employees and self-employed persons
  • Business owners with valid documentation

Credit score requirements are lenient because the loan is secured. Your diamonds provide the safety net.

What Documents Do You Need?

  • Identity proof. Aadhaar, passport, voter ID, or PAN card.
  • Address proof. Utility bills, rental agreement, or Aadhaar with current address.
  • Photographs. Recent passport-sized photos.
  • Diamond documentation. Purchase invoices, certification (if available), previous valuation reports.

Tip: Keep original purchase receipts safe. They help establish ownership and sometimes improve valuation outcomes.

The Application Process Step by Step

Knowing what happens helps you prepare better.

Step 1: Find a Suitable Lender

Banks, NBFCs, and specialised jewellery finance companies offer loans against diamonds. Compare interest rates, loan-to-value ratios, and processing times.

Step 2: Submit Your Diamonds for Valuation

The lender's certified valuer examines your stones. This typically happens at their branch in your presence. Never hand over jewellery without proper receipts.

Valuation considers the 4Cs, current market prices, and certification status. You'll receive the assessment within a few hours for most cases.

Step 3: Document Verification

Standard KYC documents get verified. Ownership proof for the diamonds gets checked. Nothing complicated if paperwork is organised.

Step 4: Loan Offer and Agreement

Based on valuation and your profile, the lender makes an offer. Loan amount, interest rate, tenure, repayment schedule. Review everything carefully.

Accept the terms? Sign the agreement. The diamonds get deposited in the lender's secure vault.

Step 5: Disbursement

Funds transfer to your bank account. Same day disbursement is common for straightforward cases. Larger loans or documentation issues might take longer.

Diamond Loan vs Gold Loan: Key Differences

People often compare these two options. Fair comparison given both are jewellery-backed loans.

Valuation Complexity

Gold has standardised pricing. Today's rate per gram is public knowledge. Valuation disputes rarely happen. Diamonds lack such standardisation. Two stones of similar weight can have vastly different values based on cut, clarity, and colour. Disputes about fair valuation occur more often.

Loan-to-Value Ratio

Gold loans routinely offer seventy-five percent of current gold value. Some lenders go higher. However, a loan against diamonds typically max out at seventy to seventy-five percent. And that's on the lender's assessed value, which already factors in their conservative approach.

Interest Rates

Gold loan rates often start around seven to eight percent annually. The interest rate for a Diamond loan starts higher, usually twelve percent onwards. The difference reflects gold's superior liquidity. Banks can sell gold easily if borrowers' default. Diamonds require more specialised disposal.

Availability

Every bank offers gold loans. A loan on diamonds remain more specialised. Fewer lenders, fewer branch locations, less competition to drive rates down.

When a Loan Against Diamonds Make Sense

Not every situation calls for pledging your precious stones.

  • Emergency Cash Needs - Medical emergencies. Unexpected business expenses. Time-sensitive opportunities. When you need funds fast and selling assets isn't acceptable, a loan against diamonds provide quick liquidity.
  • Bridging Temporary Gaps - Expecting money in three months but need cash today? A short-term diamond loan bridges that gap without permanent asset disposal.
  • Better Than Selling at Distressed Prices - Diamond resale values disappoint most sellers. If the alternative is accepting forty percent of what you paid, a loan preserving ownership makes financial sense.

Tip: Calculate the total interest cost over your planned tenure. Compare this against the loss you'd incur selling at current market rates. Choose the cheaper option.

Risks and Considerations in a Diamond Loan

Every financial product has downsides. Better to know upfront.

Valuation Disagreements - You might feel your diamonds are worth more than the lender assesses. Unfortunately, their valuation determines the loan. No appeals process exists. Getting multiple valuations from different lenders helps establish reasonable expectations.

Risk of Losing Your Jewellery - Default on repayments? The lender can auction your diamonds to recover dues. Sentimental value means nothing in such situations. Only borrow what you can confidently repay.

Lower Liquidity Than Gold - Need to switch lenders mid-tenure? Complicated process. You can exercise the balance transfer option on your loan. However, they are not as smooth as gold loan transfers.

Limited Lender Options - Fewer players means less competition. Terms might not be as favourable as more established secured loan categories.

Alternatives to Consider

While taking a loan against your diamonds can suit specific situations, other options might work better in other situations.

Personal Loans

Personal Loans are a viable solution for individuals seeking urgent finance without pledging any collateral.

Finnable offers personal loans from ₹50,000 to ₹10 lakh at interest rates starting from 15% p.a. with instant approval and disbursal as fast as sixty minutes for eligible applicants. Those seeking personal loans can check their eligibility with Finnable here before applying.

Gold Loans

If you have gold jewellery, this option offers better rates and wider availability. Consider it before taking a loan against your diamonds unless those precious stones are your only significant asset.

Credit Cards

For smaller amounts with quick repayment plans, credit card limits might suffice. Interest rates are higher but no collateral complications.

Loan Against Property

For larger amounts with longer repayment horizons, property-backed loans offer lower rates than loan against your diamonds. More paperwork though.

Making Your Decision

Diamond loans fill a specific niche. Quick liquidity against valuable assets you'd prefer not to sell.

Research lenders carefully. Get multiple valuations. Understand all charges before signing. Keep repayment capacity realistic.

And remember - those stones only help you if you can reclaim them after the loan ends.

You can usually get up to sixty to seventy-five percent on a loan against your diamonds depending on the lender's assessed value. This assessed value is usually lower than retail purchase price due to market conditions and conservative valuations.

Not mandatory but highly recommended. Certified diamonds from GIA, IGI, or HRD receive better valuations and often qualify for higher loan-to-value ratios.

The lender can auction your pledged diamonds to recover outstanding dues including principal, interest, and any applicable charges. You lose ownership of the jewellery.

Credit scores matter less for secured loans. The diamonds provide security. However, extremely poor credit history might still affect approval or terms offered.

Some flexibility exists, especially for high-value diamonds or repeat customers. Compare offers from multiple lenders to understand what's achievable.

Most lenders allow prepayment. Some charge foreclosure fees of one to two percent on outstanding principal. Check terms before committing.
